The subtle, mutually subconscious process by which the primary caretaker conveys to his or her child the important messages of either being considered as a means to fulfill the caretaker’s emotional needs or as being a “real” and unique person—these messages function as a mirror for the child during childhood and are accepted by the child as the truth about who he or she is.
When you grow up you get your first and most lasting impressions about who you are from the person who raises you. The way this person feels about you, experiences you, are all cues that you interpret and turn into a sense of who you are and how you are being viewed.
These messages develop into our belief systems that later in life become the basis from where we act. Questioning these belief systems is a valid method to investigate if, what they say about you, really makes sense.
The fact that later in life you tend to make these belief systems come through does not add any proof to the question whether or not they were true in the first place.
